Brownie definition:
A small square or rectangle of rich (usually chocolate) cake often containing nuts*. But is a brownie "cake?" Herein lies the great brownie battle between those who love their airy, cake-like brownie versus those who seek the moist, almost molten chocolate variety. I sought to unite the great brownie divide, experimenting with countless formulations until I arrived at the perfect half cake-like, half fudge-like chocolate brownie. Caramel toffee melts atop to add a burnt sugar note to the dark chocolate flavor.

Most agree that the brownie was named after its rich brown color, but the origin of the original recipe remains debatable. Credit is often given to Fannie Merrit Farmer, who published her brownie recipe in the 1896 version of The Boston Cooking School Cook Book using molasses instead of chocolate. It wasn't until 1906 when the Walter Lowney chocolate company threw some chocolate into the mix that the brownie that we know and love today was born. Still, a popular urban legend lives on that tells the tale of a woman from Bangor, Maine who forgot to add baking powder to her chocolate cake and inadvertently created the "Bangor Brownie." This recipe was thought to be the first for years, despite its questionable origin.

The best brownies!
|
| After trying these at an event at the Vosges boutique on Armitage, I had to buy a box- they are decadently delicious, oozing with caramel and chocolaty goodness! The toffee adds just the perfect touch of buttery crunch! |

AMAZING!!!
|
| This was one of the most indulgent desserts I had all year. I was so moist and rich, I had to takes breaks in b/n. It definitely is worth all the cost and extra work. |

Disappointed
|
| They were actually quite bad, to me. I think the brownie part was fine, the toffee had a weird plasticky taste, which was overpowering to what might have been a good brownie. Which was odd because I loved the toffee that I ordered separate and apart from the mix. C'est la vie. |

Very Good
|
| As with all the mixes, really easy to make, when following the instructions. I agree that the toffee had an unusual smell, but the addition of the chocolate wafers (I also added white chocolate, for fun) really increased the richness. Very Good, though I was hoping for something with a layer of gooey caramel. Sprinkle a finishing salt on top for added flavour and presentation--try Cyprus Salt. |

genius
|
| The most delicious brownies ever! Barefoot Contessa has my usual favorite recipe but THIS boxed brownie mix is absolutely superb and equally as great. If anything, I would add about four more squares of toffee :)The added delight of the toffee is genius ... really! These are the most delectable, scrumptious, moist, chocolaty-salty brownies you will ever try. You won't believe they came in a box! |

the toffee is icky!
|
| The brownies are delicious, but the toffee has a strange smell and taste. It tastes and smells like plastic coated with a rancidy oil. I was hoping that it would go away and blend in but it really didnt. Fix the toffee! |

Pretty Good
|
| These are very good, but more like molten chocolate cakes to me. I opted not to use the toffee because I was in the mood for a brownie that consisted only of chocolate. After reading previous reviews I'm glad I didn't put the plastic smelling and tasting toffee pieces on my wonderful brownies. |

Delicious except for the toffee
|
| The brownies were disgusting with the toffee. Once, I cut the toffee part out of the brownie, it was absolutely delectable. If you do buy these brownies, DO NOT put the toffee on. |

The others are right--DON'T put the toffee on
|
| I would have given these a 4 or 5 if weren't for the toffee. I told my husband, it tastes "chemically". Or as other reviewers noted, like plastic. Originally, I wanted to give these out as Christmas gifts, but now that I've actually tried them, no way! I love toffee, but not this so-called toffee. What a shame. I wish they sold a mix that didn't come with toffee. Too, too bad. |

| I bought these as a thank you for my neighbor. Lucky me, she made them for a dinner party. Everyone raved and they were gone in minutes. Fantastic!!! |

Fell apart
|
| I believe the recipe calls for too much butter, as mine just fell apart. I did wait for them to cool completely, which is difficult for me to do (as a result, I have never done a nice job of cutting brownies). To be fair, I live in higher altitudes, over 3700 feet, and I may have missed the directions to compensate for that. The toffee seemed ok, to me; I didn't notice a plastic-y or chemical flavor. My husband kept raving about these brownies ("They're the best I've ever had!"), but I really thought the Hershey's mix I get at the warehouse store was much better. I'll give these another try though, before throwing in the towel and blaming anybody but myself. |

Sub-Par Toffee in Brownies
|
| I have been a fan of Vosges for a decade. The toffee in these brownies tastes HORRIBLE. I think I know what's happening: Vosges trusted a 2nd party manufacturing plant to create/box the mix, and the result is toffee chips that have an unpleasant burnt plastic smell and taste. Without the toffee the brownies are delicious, although some might find the 1.5 sticks of butter make them a little greasy (be certain to use UNSALTED butter). I have a similar complaint with the Mo's Bacon Chocolate Chip Pancake Mix. I ate a few of the chips before I made the pancakes: bad. In the finished cakes, the chips were just bland chocolate with sharp pieces of salt. No bacon flavor, just salt. Vosges: You're better than this. Fire this packing plant as soon as the contract runs out. |
