The Malbec grape enjoyed some notoriety in the grand Bordeaux reds of France and often makes a guest appearance in the now omnipresent "Meritage" wines of California. But it is in South America that this grape thrives, particularly Argentina, where hot temperatures along with the lovely shade of the Andes Mountains seem to soften its intense tannins, letting yummy red fruit and vanilla shine through.
Clos de Los Siete, "house of the seven," is an oasis of seven vineyards south of Mendoza, overseen by influential oenologist Michel Rolland. The wine is predominantly made from the Malbec grape with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah rounding out the blend. The wine pours a deep, rich purple emanating notes of mocha, raisin and cocoa. On the palate it is dominated by ripe plum, fig, boysenberry and toasted oak. The finish is dry with a touch of spice, perfect with the ancho chili pepper and Ceylon cinnamon Red Fire truffle. The entire Aztec Collection, inspired by the ingredients of Mexico and South America, also pay homage to the wine's origin.
