First thing's first. What is a Chakra?

By the dictionary's definition, a sacral chakra is "any of several points of physical or spiritual energy in the human body according to yoga philosophy".

The human body has more than 88,000 points of physical or spiritual energy according to yoga philosophy, each known as a chakra. In Hinduism there are seven major chakras, and in Tantra (practices outlined in later Hindu or Buddhist scriptures) there are four, each associated with a color, shape, sense organ, natural element, deity and mantra.

Each of the chakras are thought to be spinning disks of energy that should stay open and aligned. Each of them corresponds to a set of nerves or organs in our body, so it is important to understand how to balance your chakras. Imbalanced chakras or a blocked chakra can lead to a disruption in our physical well-being or cause emotional imbalance.

Once one sacral chakra becomes imbalanced, others may begin to overcompensate. It is necessary to balance those chakras that require it through opening them, but there is no need to focus energy on those that are overcompensating for them. Once you have the imbalanced, balanced, the others will fall back into balance on their own.

How Do You Know When One of Your Chakras is Out of Balance?

Depending on which of your chakras are out of balance, various symptoms and the degree to which you experience them will vary. It could be as simple as something feeling off. You might feel this in your physical body or your thoughts might feel hazy. You could feel lethargy. You might feel sick, get better quickly and then get sick again, creating a cycle that needs your intervention. You may become forgetful or make simple mistakes. You may have bouts of feeling like pieces of your life are falling apart. You may also feel pain and stiffness in your muscles and joints, digestive issues and soreness or tenderness in different parts of your body. You may feel less creative or more emotional and you may have less compassion for yourself and others. There are many other symptoms of a blocked chakra, but there are also simple ways to heal chakra blockage and reclaim the peace that comes with having your chakra system in balance.

Some Exercise and Tips to Create Alignment

Want to know how to balance chakras? Since each chakra has its own symptoms when they are out of balance, they likewise can be put back into alignment using practices that are specific to each of them. While not all of them can be addressed here, there are some ways to approach chakra healing overall that will get you started.

  • Get in touch with the elements. Go outside and breathe in the air. Dip your toes into water or swim. Spend some time in a commune with trees. Sit in the sun and feel the heat on your face. Nature is one of the best tools we have for realignment.
  • Get onto the mat. Practicing yoga poses is one of the best ways to align your physical body and show care for your mental health. Adopt a daily practice to bring consistency to the maintenance of all your chakras. Stretch and reach for the sun.
  • Meditate with crystals. Crystal therapy is a beautiful way to address chakra imbalance. Choose crystals that resonate with you in color and meaning and address the areas of your body that require them.
